Pérez-Reverte explodes: "Let there be idiots who rejoice in the fire at the Cordoba mosque..."

The fire that broke out last Friday at the Cordoba mosque, which ultimately affected 25 square meters of the 23,000 square meters it covers, has prompted regrettable comments on social media, with some users claiming to be pleased with what happened.

Writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte has reacted harshly on his official X account to denounce this type of behavior. His message was: "The fact that there are idiots on social media who rejoice in the burning of the mosque in Córdoba shows the extent to which we have been poisoned by stupidity and bad blood in this increasingly illiterate country."

Furthermore, the Cartagena journalist took the opportunity to clarify the name of the Cordoba temple: "Well, excuse me (or not). But I've called the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba my entire life, ever since I first set foot in it sixty years ago, the Mosque of Cordoba. I believe it's perfectly compatible (and fair). And I intend to continue doing so."

The Islamic Board of Córdoba

In addition to Arturo Pérez-Reverte, the Islamic Council also spoke out, expressing its "pain and concern" over the fire at the mosque in Córdoba and stating that it is even "more chilling than seeing the fire" to see people expressing their hopes on social media that the monument would "disappear forever."

In a statement, this Muslim organization in Córdoba expressed its "support and solidarity" to the security forces and firefighters who responded "swiftly and effectively to the fire," preventing "a disaster similar" to that which occurred at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

"Yesterday, many of us watched with heavy hearts as the flames surged through the roof, and we followed the news until the announcement of its extinction," says the Islamic Council, which hopes that the temple's integrity can soon be restored and protected "with all necessary resources."

"We also had to read on social media how there were people, fortunately few, who, displaying their ignorance and intolerance, were congratulating themselves on the event and wishing the building would disappear forever. That's even more chilling than seeing the fire inside the mosque," he added.

The Islamic Council deplores what it considers to be the "ideological and outdated blindness" of these people, which "prevents them from seeing that in that building, for many centuries, people have always prayed to the One God of all believers."
